Profile: South African Street Artist Faith47

Faith47 | Street Artist | Stated Magazine Profile

By Indigo, Fine Arts Contributing Editor

Faith lives in Cape Town, South Africa with her boyfriend and fellow artist, Dal. They travel a lot, as is evidenced by her upcoming mural and installation projects in Paris, Milan, Johannesburg, Melbourne, and Lima. As she searches the planet for the next place to settle down, she’s making her mark with emotionally arresting murals that pair well with her expressed interest in the “architecture of neglect, the textures, marks, and scratches left in public spaces that people walk past every day but never see.”

Editing some photos I took while in Johannesburg for the “voyage” section on my website. Johannesburg is one of my favorite places to take photos; the moments you bear witness to are really raw and powerful.

The pain, beauty, profundity, and ridiculousness of being part of this human race.

I’d like to discover more abandoned spaces in Africa and other under-developed nations / states. War-torn buildings, inner city high rises that have been squatted. I want to study the textures and scrawlings of what people leave behind. I’m interested in the architecture of neglect, the textures, marks, and scratches left in public spaces that people walk past every day but never see. Worn-down steps, postered walls, dirtied corners hiding sleeping vagrants from the public eye. Stowaways’ poems and gang tags. Random thoughts scribbled on walls, dirty hand marks, smoke-stained walls.

Off the top of my head I’d specify,

cashril+ - such an insightful and beautiful mind

daleast - he stole my heart

ai weiwei - for the shit he has to swim through

jordan metcalf - what a gem

the wild eyes - for their originality and unapologetic honesty

the king of kowloon - the most genuine street artist

aubrey beardsley - for the perfection of his lines

vania zouravliov - what enigmatic eyes he sees

albrecht durer - a true master

I’m still figuring that out. Dal and I are traveling a lot so it’s helping us to get a sense of where we want to be. I like to keep moving around, but to have a base in a city that has access to good weather, nature, and that inspires one to create works. Not too clean, not too dirty. A bit of chaos. A bit of calm.

Work mostly. Overactive minds should be quelled by clear thinking in order to bring an appreciation for deep calm resting.
