Ger: To Be Separate

We recently had the pleasure of meeting Ger Duany. Ger is one of the Lost Boys of Sudan who became a child soldier separated from his family when he was 10. He endured the life of a refugee at camps in Ethiopia and Kenya and, after a tremendous amount of unimaginable struggle and hardship, was brought to the United States at age 14. He now lives in New York City where he is an actor and model.

Award-winning Kenyan filmmaker Wanuri Kahiu and Ger are ready to share his story. The documentary, Ger: To Be Separate, traces Ger’s path from childhood through his July 2011 return to South Sudan to search for his family and celebrate the country’s independence.

If you’ve not yet supported a Kickstarter campaign, then what better place to start? Join us in support of this film.

To hear a bit from Ger and appreciate the man behind this effort, here is an excellent interview on MukamiTV.

SITE OF THE DAY: Learn Something Every Day

Learn Something Every Day

Artwork: Marcus Walters

Visitors to Learn Something Every Day can do just that—or at least they could until Aug. 31st, when the site posted its final “lesser known fact”. Every day for the past two years, the site has posted a new graphic sharing a new interesting factoid. A project of UK-based design studio, Young, the daily posts were a combination of in-house and outside artists’ work, with submissions for ideas encouraged.

Join us in wishing them a fond farewell and be sure to pick up a copy of the Learn Something Every Day 365-day print edition from Amazon.

SITE OF THE DAY: stereomood

Stereomood

stereomood offers “free emotional internet radio” to cater to your every mood. It operates under the conceit that there is literally, not only a song, but a full playlist for every occasion. A quick sampling of playlists ranged from the requisite “Chillout” (which, during our visit offered everything from a remix of John Denver’s “Country Road” to Emancipator’s “Nevergreen”) to less obvious collections such as “Asleep On My Feet” (we heard “He Lays in the Reins” by Iron and Wine and Tom Waits’ “All the World is Green”.) Users can setup accounts to create their own playlists, tag, and save songs, and every song is accompanied by legal purchasing links.

SITE OF THE DAY: Lost at E Minor

Lost in E Minor

Lost at E Minor is a major time suck. And that’s a good thing. Brooklyn’s Zavos brothers and their impressive list of guest writers keep it filled with fascinating artwork, photography, interesting tidbits, and links to great sites to keep you inspired.
